Recording problems with Firewire drive

I have reduced most sound quality problems with Live by moving samples to an external Firewire drive.
I guess the drive is fast enough (most of the time) to feed data to Live without defects.
Now I'm making music and I'm trying to record the session to an audio file.
I've tried both 16- and 24-bit recording to AIFF and WAV within Live.
I have also tried recording via Sound Studio Pro and Spark LE Plus.
In all cases, I get "blips" every second throughout the end sound file.
This happens whether I use the Firewire drive or internal hard drive as the scratch (temp file) destination.
Does anyone have suggestions for improving recording quality?
