Hi All,

Just curious if anyone knows of any factory DX7 banks for Operator floating around out there. I'm asking because it's something I've been wanting to do for a while but never got around to. But if someone already did it then I guess it would be pointless.

thnx,

micah

that is impossible since Operator only has 4 operators, the DX7 has 6 operators..

not the same since the operators cannot modulate each other from one instance of Operator to another..

Good point. I'm not very good with numbers above 5

Whether that will work or not depends on the algorithm

Might be able to come close though, assuming many of the DX7 factory patches either a) don't employ all 6 operators and b) some of these voices are run in parallel, in which case you could use 2 Operators racked.

The trick here would be to convince Robert to terrorize Matthias Mayrock until we can send signals from one Operator to another. Operator 3?
Oscillator E: the output signal of the carrier(s) of any chosen Operator.
Given a few extra algorithms, we could reconstruct any FM sound and have infinite Operators to do so.

it wouldnt work even with 6 operators because envelope characteristics and lfo is too different from the dx 7...

good point.. didn't the DX7 have multiple breakpoint envelopes? or was that in FM7?

Brilliant.

I guess the key word here would be "modeling". I mean, how many Live users want their Al Jarreau presets?

I think that was FM7.

just browsing through some dx7 patches. good news is that many of them don't employ more that 3 x 1 in series. But still.. many of them do.

you should do it anyway, but it definitely doesn't sound the same. I've tried to port patches over, even with the layering of two operators, and its always a different sound.

Yeah, I can imagine. I'll try a few and see where it goes. If anything we'll have Operator versions of DX7 sounds.

FWIW I have the best Yamaha four op synth here (DX11) and Operator kicks its ass royally.
