Hello,
i ve got a little problem with an Dell Inspiron 5100 and my new hard drive Hitachi Travelstar 7200 rpm.
When i work with Live 4.01 if i do a small rest ( nothing plays during 30 sec ...) when i play start again i've got a shortdisk overload which produce a short audio drop out ....
Before, i had a 4200 rpm HD and not this kind of problem....it was only too slow...
Is that due to the HD ? Is that RAM ?
My Inspiron is 5100 with a 2.4 Ghz, with 384 Mo Ram, RME HDSP Multiface,
USB 2*2.This is the last RME driver.

what do you hear? A spinning up hard drive?

well the drive is rather quiet....the sound disapears roughly 1 sec if i do a rest longer than 45 sec. There are no crackles, no dirty noises ....just nothing and then sound again and the "D" indicator in Live lights up

i ve also checked it with an Echo Indigo Playback...same prob.

Also tested on differents projects, it does not matter with the CPU load or numbers of clips.

It's just like the drive goes to sleep and wake up too late...

I only work in the session mode ...with sometime clip of 30 sec...

what kind of tests can i do ?

sorry i didnt log in for my previous reply ...
An other info about the drive :
it's splitted in 3 parts ... on for my OS WinXP (10 Go-NTFS) , on for my SOUNDS (40 Go -NTFS) and on for my ghosts (10 Go-FAT32)...

what you experience is that the data does not arrive
in time from the drive. Maybe there is some way in the
BIOS or otherwise to prevent the drive from going to sleep?
Or at least to set a longer time interval until it is put to sleep?

Thanks for your suggestions.
My sleep options were ok. Never sleep on any devices( display and drives).
i went on the dell web site and i ve downloaded a new BIOS version for the 5100.
It seems to work ok now ! ...There were a few news in that bios...now it seems to be fine .
For dell users it's the A29 version.
There was also firmware updates for some Fijitsu and IBM drives it could maybe solve other users problems....(troubleshooting with high temperatures)!!

I have this kind of overload when I don't play my VSTi's for bit. They are still "loaded", but when I come back to it there are drop-outs in the audio like crazy. I wish that the program would hold all of the sound in memory even when I'm not playing it. I assume that this is the issue...any thoughts?

your hard drive is an hitachi 7200 ?

i had the trouble only with audio clips ... no midi in the project only samples...
