Library Help!

so i installed L8 and allowed it to install its own new library, rather than update the L7 library (i have alot of projects that i need to be able to access in 7 still).
what i SHOULD HAVE DONE is make a copy of my L7 library and "update" it during the L8 installation.
my question is, what should i do now to get a combined library of my old presets / samples, plus the presets of L8;
- do a clean install of 8 (which i cant seem to get right)?
- just use a copy of the 7 librarian and get the 8 presets from elsewhere?
thanks for your help in this confusing matter.

alright i dont need your guys's help
i made a copy of old 7 library, threw out the 8 library and told live to "change location" of the library to the copy (of 7).
this updated the library, replaced some old stuff, added some new stuff.

hi
looks like you allready figured it out,but im answering anyway because it confused me too
so:
no need to re-install live8
just copy your live7library to a new location....
then point live8 to this copy,live8 will detect that its a live7-library
,and update/install the live8 data automatically
thus merging your old(live7)library into the new (copied) library
and you will still have the old library for live7
this worked for me
greets
seis

I was wrestling with this issue too before installing(Live 8 Suite) cause I wanted to move my Live library from my primary drive to my secondary drive. I realize this may be old news to some of the experts on this board but I just wanted to post this in case there were others out there that were, like me, too chicken to mess with Live's default installation routine. I'm glad I did it because the library has swelled to over 3 gigs. Here's what I did...
From within Live 7 I copied the existing library to a new folder I created on my secondary drive using the "browse" button. I believe that when you do it this way, as opposed to using your OS, the path is stored along with your other preferences. That way when I installed Live 8 the dialog box just asks for confirmation that you want to install the library to the newly created location. I just clicked OK and everything went without a hitch. At some point I was asked if I wanted to delete the old (Live 7) library but I opted out of that in case I still need to use Live 7.

I have Live 7 Suite, but that library is very large and quite customized, so I didn't want
to mess with it. If anything got updated I might not be able to use it in Live 7.
Since I found many problems in the PC install, but none on the Mac install, I decided
to copy the Live 8 Mac library to my PC. See
http://forum.ableton.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=111852
for details.
There are structural differences in name and form to the Live 8 library for the Mac compared to the PC.
See
http://forum.ableton.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=112081
I installed all my Live packs as well as all the older third party live sets that I have on the Mac
and copied it via Ethernet to the PC. I also installed all the older legacy live packs, like the Live 4 and 5 compatibility packs, Impulse and Simpler packs, etc.
After running Manage Library, I found a few samples not referenced (the Loopmasters set, the
older legacy samples and sample hits, and a few new ones in Session Drums). I grouped these by
package (a nice new browser feature in live!) and saved them in a live set in the library so
that I would have no unreferenced samples.
Now both PC and Live have identical libraries with no unreferenced stuff.
Whow, that's quite some stuff. I guess that is the complete suite?
How many of the 11thousand presets will you never open once in your lifetime?

Yes, the complete Suite 8.0.1 plus most of the legacy Live Packs from the Ableton LivePacks web page.
My Live 7 library has 15748 presets.
Session drums have 3 or 4 thousand presets which I rarely use, but I think I opened every
instrument preset (in Live 7 and before) much more than twice.
I also have lots of duplicate Simpler/Sampler presets, that is, Simpler presets converted to Samplers.

I got to thinking about this. 12,000 presets auditioned at 10 seconds each would probably take a day or two to listen.
So I looked closer. Actually there are 'only' about 2500 'instruments' or sound producers in my library. And quite a lot of these are Session Drums, or variations in the EIC.
There's also lots of little stuff like a MIDI Pitch preset that shift the pitch by an octave, hundreds of scales and chords, lots of EQs - I don't count those.
So when you really get down to it, it doesn't take all that much time to preview the ones of interest.

How did you do this? I figured out how to click "Show" in the unused files section but now I'm stuck
