L7 "The preset cannot be loaded. It's probably broken."

After the L8 installation the presets in L7 are no longer working. I might have installed the L8 to same directory/library. I'm on OSX 10.5.6.

I cant use L8 as my Operator and Sampler are not authorized there, so I have to still work with L7. As i finally got Analog etc. I'd really like to browse trough the presets, but no go.

Should I uninstall L8 and re-install L7 or can I just revert the library to L7 format? Actually I can't re-install L7 as my "unlocking limit reached" thank you very much again for this fantastic copy-protection system.

I might get the library back with time-machine, but is there some preference files somewhere that needs to be changed also?

Or I could have just used the Search function to find out that I have to re-build my library and re-download everything again.

I'd really just like to make music and not re-do anything. Well that what you get if you fix something that ain't broken. I was perfectly happy L7 user.

Hi Jeremiah,

here´s how to rebuild a Live 7 Library:

- create a new, empty folder somewhere on your hard disk (the default directory on a Mac is: user/library/preferences/ableton, but you can choose any location on your drive)
- give it a a significant name (eg. "Live Library")
- open Live 7 file/folder preferences page
- with the browse button next to "Library Location", select your new folder
- when you´re being asked, select to create a new Library and to install default content
- you´ll need to install extra content of sampled instruments (EIC, Session Drums) from the DVDs again
- you can find additional the Livepacks for other add-on instruments here: http://www.ableton.com/livepacks
- install the Livepacks via the file menu ("Install Live Pack") or by simply dragging it into Live´s program window

Best,
Jörg

hey Jörg, thanks for the reply
I guess I'll have to get into more detail

I installed a demo version of 8 to check it out
as I'm not getting it right now I threw all the live 8 folders I could find in the trash
I didn't touch my library, only folders that had an L8 name
since then my own L7 presets and then I found the factory presets haven't worked
I check out your work around, but my library seems fine
the pathway is correct and all the presets, including my own are there, they just don't work:
my library folder is
/ABLETON TEMP/presets, /audio effects, /instruments, /MIDI effects
these all work
the /ABLETON TEMP/defaults folder is empty (is there supposed to be content here?)
all the other folders in my library seem fine and have content

I upgraded to the full L7 version via the online store so I do not have a dvd to install extra content with.
When the disk image is mounted there is only the Live 7.0.16 folder to drag onto my hard disk.
I have re-installed it already
checked out the library and whatnot
Do I need to completely delete my Library?
if that is the case, is there anyway to save my own presets?

Also, this seemed strange;
/Users/[your user name]/Library/Application Support/Ableton Live Engine
the ableton live engine was only an alias, is it supposed to be like that?
it was also an alias under /library/Application Support/Abelton Live Engine
it still is that way after the re-install of L7

I think that about covers it, I hope this gives you a clear picture of my situation :)

cheers
J

Hi Jeremiah,

thanks for the detailed description : your Live 7 library got updated to a Live 8 Library after installing the demo. Please simply follow the steps I provided in my previous post, this should fix the problem.

Best,
Jörg

I freakin' love the Ableton Live forum. I just had this same problem, searched for that phrase, found this thread, realized what my solution was, and minutes later everything was working fine again.

I use a lot of forums, and this is my favorite.

(In my case, the prob was only that I still have an earlier version of Live installed, and I used the alias/shortcut that starts the old version. I had forgotten to replace that alias with a newer one.)

Hi Jorg

i've got a similar problem:

i was running L8.0.4. then i bought an apc40 and i couldnt manage to get Live to recognize it. so i installed the version of Live that came with the apc40. this was a 7 version i believe and during installation i was asked to upgrade to Live 8 form Abletons website. that would be version 8.2.1
indeed i think in remember the library was setup again. after it finished installation of 821 still not a working apc.
i found the solution on this forum actually, i unplugged ALL other usb devices (nocturn keyboard and hp printer), then plugged in the apc, turned it on, heard windows accept it, then run Live 821 and it worked!
so then i re-installed 804 (suite), since 821 version was only the special apc40 edition and then i ran into the problem of presets cannot be loaded, probably broken.
i tried to follow your reply; make a new library, uninstall 804, re-install 804, but i am never asked to setup the library again.
stilla lot of things are broken and not to be used. for example mastering suite etc.
i hope somebody can help me out, i'm going slightly mad.

thanks in advance
jeroen
