hello all.

yesterday i decided to use Live 7 to capture voiceovers for a project.
usually i use Logic for capture, but since the final destination for these VOs will be Live
i decided to record straight to it.

i use live extensivly for playback and sound design, but not really as a DAW in the recording sense.

anyway, it turned out that these voice sessions will require extensive splicing into each other.

i recorded in Session view and named all the clips/takes appropriately.
but when i realized there would be a lot of non-linear editing i checked in the 'recorded audio' folder
and the naming did not carry over unto the original AIFFs.. ugh.

i think i might have been better off recording the VOs in Arrangement, or indeed stick with Logic.
but how would you guys/gals who use Live as a more traditional audio editor proceed?

i wanted to just pull the aiffs into Logic and splice 'em up there, but w/o the names it's
ruff. i have all these raw takes in clips in a Session view.

is there a process to get Live to use the clip names to name the AIFFs?
is there an automated way to export the AIFFs using the clips names?

if i'm stuck editing in Live (i'd love to get more fluent but
i haven't seen that Live is a viable audio editor yet),
what would be my best route from Session View (where i'm comfortable)
to Arrangement for editing?

Session and Arrangement..)

Well, at least, moving your recorded audio to arrangement will allow you to do splicing in Live, by cutting moving and joining pieces of audio and clips together. Have a look at the Split and Consolidate functions in Live. For instance you can select a clip range where your bit of audio that needs to be sliced, resides and hit Control+E(Split) to cut that bit, then you can move it around, cut another bit, then you can join clips together by selecting Control+J(Consolidate). Another thing you can do is select a range in your clip and drag it outside the main clip instead of selecting the Split function first. Also, selecting a range in the clip, pressing Control, then dragging, you can move a copy of that range to another location(retaining the original clip's length and structure). Generally, probably not a deep as Logic does it but quite easy and fast.

As far as the aiff clip naming you were asking, I don't think it's possible.

for using the Arrange that doesn't screw with the intricate things i construct in the Session view.
and that doesn't involve firing up Logic (which usually means quitting Live).

The arrangement view will give you a more convenient way to chop up audio than the session. Then, you can select all your resulting audio pieces and hit Control+J to consolidate the result and drag the clip back to session where you feel more comfortable. It's easy to get the hang of it.

Really? Actually, I've never been there, is it actually going to be in the cave? I would be interested to meet new people and talk about music and learn new things, as well. Just send me a message and let me know when you get there?

yup. IN the cave..
and around it.

it's a bit technically spooky, as there's no electrical power.
we're researching generators or battery powered stuff..
i would LOVE to put a subwoofer deep inside there!

and of course the cave has a reputation as a place where electronics
go wild.
all superstition, i'm sure!!

Select all the clips in session view. Click on the upper left clip, hit tab, drop it on track 1 of arrangement view.

aanother way to do it is by hitting record on top, then play. It will transfer in real time what was in session view.
