I'm running ableton 4.01 under XP and Win 2000 on different partitions. The XP partition also has Logic installed. When I boot into XP and start Ableton (without starting Logic) the CPU load is up to 55-90%. 40% of this load is consumed by the system process, about 20% by ableton. Ableton itself only indicates a load of 2%. The system is definitely slowed down though and I do not have this problem under Win2000. I suspected a problem with the USB Audiophile drivers. I have installed the entire system again with the newest chipset and M-Audio drivers - no change. I do not have this problem when I start Logic or Reason. CPU load is OK. Does anyone know if Logic alters the ASIO setup in a way that causes such a problem?

What exactly are your system specs.

AMD Duron 1,2 Gigahertz, 1.2 Gig RAM, M-Audio Auidiophile USB. OS: XP Servicepack 1. As I said, the annoying thing is, that everything is fine under Win 2000 SP4 without logic and everything was fine until I reinstalled Logic. Uninstalling it does not help however.

see above (guess I should have replied using my user name). Any help is welcome as the Win 2000 Partition is having problems with raid controller and other things, so I cant't really use it.

I had a really high CPU load problem that was caused by the midi looping in on itself. Try setting some of the midi out paths to none and see if the same thing happens

I wish it was that simple. The settings on both systems are identical. All midi outputs are disabled. I don't know if this is relevant, but I'm having severe problems with 00ma*.exe errors under 2000. I doubleclick on a *.als file and the entire system crashes. This was the initial reason to try and sort things out under XP. There I've got the load problem and I can't use more than two effects at once. When I use directX drivers or similar everything is fine, except the latency is not acceptable and all the other restrictions..Also when I install the newest drivers for the M-Audio, the M-audio audiophile ASIO drivers are no longer available, only the "audiophile" drivers. Again, as soon as I install or reinstall the original drivers from the m-audio cd the m-audio audiophile ASIO drivers are selectabel again. The load problem remains however. I just don't know where to look for a solution. XP has the load problem and 2000 has an application exception every now and again that causes the whole system to crash, reboot and repair the filesystem. Under 2000 the system acknowledges an application fault respective of the soundcard application (00ma...exe caused error) but the logs in windows does not offer any clarification. XP does not offer an error log, it sais everything is fine. Can I alter the settings so that I get a half-way intelligent error log? At least that would help. Thanks to all..
