8.01 Phantom clip copy follows mouse cursor around

At least half a dozen times in a full work day I get the following:
I'm copying a clip in arrange or session view using the apple-drag method (or is it ctl? can't remember the modifier offhand), the clip copies fine on mouseup, but I still see the 'ghosted' clip copy attached to my mouse cursor.
I can no longer perform any operation that involves moving/copying/selecting clips until I shut down live, and no matter what I try, I cannot get rid of the ghosted clip following my cursor. I then get the OSX crash dialog after Live exits.
I'm on 10.5.6 on a 2.4ghz Macbook Pro using 8.01
I also can't replicate it as it appears to happen randomly.
