I was watching some videos of cubase and saw how you could select an area of a recording and drag up or down to increase the volume there, showingyou the waveform get bigger...Essentially making sure all parts of your recording (at least where you want them to be) are the same "loudness/attack". I record live digital piano and this would be useful in visually normalizing certain parts....

What is the best .wav editing software in general...possibly that can do this as well? I do not like Audacity for this type of stuff. And no, I do not want to switch to cubase

Personally, I use Soundtrack Pro, and it is just killer, although I got my version with Final Cut Pro, which is spendy. It comes with Logic 8, too, if you're looking at another DAW, and Logic 8 is actually well priced (now it is, anyway).

I am using Amadeus Pro which is well priced and performs all basic operations that I need. However it has a few bugs that need to be sorted out that make it crash on a rare occasion. Other than that the interface is pretty nice and intuitive, it also supports external plugins and plugin chains, markers etc.

I switched to Mac about 7 years ago. And I still miss Wavelab. I also tried Wave Editor, Peak, DSP-Quattro, Audacity etc. but really hated all of them. according to that site, it's PC only, and the op is looking for a mac app.

I'm using Sound Forge Audio Studio, its Sound Forges 9 Pro's little brother. Good set of features, not free but economically priced. Tried many others but this one just did it for me.

I miss Wavelab too, Wave Editor is nice, but still a long way off from the power and stability of Wavelab.

To me it's still Peak despite what some say about it being bloated. I've tried Wave Editor, Amadeus, Sound Studio, Audacity and I still prefer Peak because of the little things that allow me to work much faster. For example, when highlighting a section of a wave file, you often want to zoom in on both ends in order to have it precisely where you want it. Two things that are really helpful in this situation are being able to quickly look at both ends of the highlighted section (while zoomed in all the way for example) and being able to easily drag the boundaries the highlighted section. Only some of the other editors can do the second one but none of the other ones can do the first, which Peak can do by just hitting the left or right arrow key after highlighting a section. This saves me so much time and is an integrated part of my workflow that none of the other editors do it for me.

yep same here. you get some great plugins with soundtrack pro also.

Soundtrack Pro has a lot going for it as a wav editor, it also helps a lot for lots of other tasks.

A bit pricey, but Adobe Audition is pretty good, and it's little brother Soundbooth is also good.
