Dropouts

Not sure if I'm asking too much of my system, but I've been experiencing, what I consider to be, an unacceptable level of glitchy noise and small dropouts with my Ableton setup.
I have a 1.7 duo-core athlon with 3 gigs of ram and over 150 gigs of free hard drive space.
My audio interface is a Mackie u.420d firewire mixing surface.
My MIDI interface is an M-Audio Axiom 49 via USB.
I've tried using both interfaces connected to my computer separately and they seem to incur the same glitchy response.
It's not even necessarily very terrible, but it is audible and seems to happen every few minutes.
I have the latest drivers for both pieces of hardware.
All extraneous programs are terminated when I use Ableton. I even turn off my wireless configuration.
The latency on the Mackie u.420d is at 64ms (i notice no change in the consistency of the glitchy audio when the latency is raised).
It does not appear that my CPU is being overloaded when these noises occur.
Has anyone had similar experiences here?
As I said before, am I simply asking too much of my system, or should these things be functioning properly?
Thank you in advance for your help!
