not that i would get it, but with today's plug-ins, is this still a rationale buy, or just a collector's item..

No 303 is worth that much. I had one for a couple years, and while it was neat from a historical perspective, it just got old for me after awhile. Unless are you're doing is acid tunes all the time, I don't think it's worth it in the long run. You can get 99% of the way there with software that's MUCH easier to use. That last 1% I truly don;t think is even something the vast majority of people would be able to hear in the context of a mixdown.

But, if you're a full on acid freak who just loves that sound more than your mother, it IS the original.

I know its a cult machine and all, but $2500 is not worth the price. Just get rebirth instead :-)

Unless you make huge wads of cash from your music and you can throw money around like that..

One of the easiest ebay scams is to advertise something twice. First advert is outrageously expensive and the second advert is still expensive but in comparison to the first advert is much cheaper, thereby making you think that it's a bargain.

Buyer beware.

And yes, who would want to pay such an outrageous price for a really basic synth. For that money you could get a large modular system capable of so much more or alternatively a top of the range computer and soundcard with whatever DAW and a number of plug ins.

However, if you've got too much money, then it's a bargain.....and whilst you're at it, you may as well get it gold plated as the original casing looks a bit tacky.

if it's pristine and working perfectly, it might be worth about half that if you absolutely must have a TB-303.

then, you'll have all the issues of a real TB..... you need a sync box, you'll actually have to program it in step time, you'll need to manually write down all the notes and rests and slides, etc on a piece of paper if you come up with a pattern that you cannot live without, the occasional 25 year old janky button that doesn't want to work properly, etc.

i have had a few over the years and i still have my old original one, but i would never ever pay that kind of money for a TB- i'd settle for the software version by Audio Realism, which is 90%+ of the way there. there's nothing quite like the sound of the real thing, but it's really not worth that kind of loot.

If you really want the hardware transistor bass (TB) sound, get an x0xb0x, you don't even need to build one as there are a ton available second-hand. They are reverse-engineered 303s WITH MIDI. There are also quite a few different OSs available that offer features such as shuffle that were not available on the original. I've seen x0xb0x's sell for around $600-800 on eBay.

I love my x0xb0x.

Kind of funny that the listing even points out that they sell for $1000-$3000, and cites a recent eBay auction that sold for less than what the seller is asking. Unless that was the actual 303 used in the recording of some landmark recording, looks like it's a bit steep. Probably less a case of somebody wanting to gouge others for the equipment as much as it's someone who doesn't really want to part with it.

The scenario I imagine is that someone's significant other is making the seller clean out the garage/basement and get rid of all that old music gear. "Okay, okay - I'll put an ad on Craigs List... are you happy now?" :)
