this is not a problem with your nocturn, but the ableton side, check this forum with keywords like "recording automations"...

I guess, maybe am I wrong, but you don't really precise what you did and didn't configure.

anyway to answer the title of this topic, no, I don't use nocturn w ableton, because it annoys me sooo much. I'm selling it ;)

good luck

sorry no relevant info for OP

just gotta say my nocturn is annoying as hell too. someone needs to make 3rd party software for it. It has way more potential than automap allows.

i only bought the nocturn for two features.
1) the horizontal crossfader
2) the speed dial

i feel compelled to say that both of those controls SUCK!!!! the speed dial occasionally gets stuck, meaning my mouse disappears and doesn't come back (have to manually turn off comp). the x-fader just stops working in the middle of fades. i have been using an endless encoder on my bcr and 3 keystrokes for x-fading because that works fine.

I have to make sure I'm not trying to move my mouse when I use the speed dial.

As for the crossfader, I just turned off pickup modes and it fixed that problem. You shouldn't have to do this, but it's what I did to make it work right.

i don't use the pickup modes, but this is still very much a prob with the nocturn. x-fader works fine with other controllers. i'm prob gonna put some tape over the speed dial so i don't accidentally touch/hit it during gigs and to remind me of how much it's a piece of sh** dial. :!:

a drop of super glue would look better ;)

I have been using automap for vsts and will continue. the slider for their volume.
and speed dial for occasional preset change.

and non-automap for controlling live's racks.

The speed dial is pretty useless in Live. I love it for Traktor though.

can anyone tell me what they have "step" set to in automap for their crossfader, if your x-fader works fine that is. i have mine set to 1, and i have tried others with no luck. if i perform a very slow fade while mixing it gets stuck along the way in live. i was thinking the "step" value in the automap sw might be the reason. tyvm.

it's a really, really sweet dial in concept. it controls whatever your mouse is hovering over, plugins, live, internet, etc. it just has a mind of it's own. i think it might have something to do with the touch sensitivity. as soon as it's touched the mouse disappears as it takes control of the parameter. the problem is that the mouse does not always reappear.

You can't change the step size of the crossfader. It let's you do it in the software, but it has no real effect on anything at all.

I wish Automap would send CC signals for touch... there are some simple ass things that would make that controller 100 times better.

I sent Novation an email. You guys should consider sending them an email. This is a great product but the software needs some tweaks.
The Nocturn is a good controller, but there are a couple very simple software features that would make it a million times better.

1) You should be able to map the crossfader to one midi channel no matter what page or user/fx/inst/mixer page you are on.

I use my Nocturn for live mixing in Ableton Live, and I can only have the crossfader work in one of the user/fx/inst/mixer pages. That makes the crossfader very useless a lot of the time. I want the crossfader to be midi channel 1 CC 127 no matter what page or user/fx/inst/mixer I'm on.

2) If you've ever used a Korg nanoPAD you know that it sends a midi CC signal when you touch the pad, and when you release it. What this means, is you can touch the pad, send a CC signal to enable a filter, change 2 filter parameters with x and y coordinates, and turn off the filter when your finger leaves the pad.

The Nocturn has touch sensitive encoders. You should be able to send CC signals on touch. That way an effect is enabled when you touch the knob, you can change a parameter by twisting, and then the effect is turned off when you release.

I am considering returning my Nocturn because of these two simple things. Maybe that's why there is huge amounts of B-stock Nocturns all over the internet.

Thanks,
Luke
