I hope you are now walking out of the Apple store; having come to your senses and decided to get a real laptop.

If you want a mac, buy a mac, they're great computers, and I've never had any real problems with my macs (on my 7th). I got dead pixels in my monitor on my last MBP, and the apple store took care of it. Otherwise nothing but smooth.
If you wait until the macbook pros update, you can get a killer discount on the macbook pro that was new last week at Guitar Center -bought my last macbook pro (the one with the dead pixels) for $1400 - when they swapped it out, I got the brand new one that would have cost me $2000 for nothing extra.

Just save mad loot and buy a regular macbook with the firewire port. Basically it's the same thing expect your productions may not come as pro if you used a macbook pro.

The new gen MBP is my first Apple laptop, and I've been nothing but perfectly happy with it for the few months I've owned it.

it's a great buy. definitely not the cheapest laptop, but very stable and reliable - which is what you if you use it for playing live. I returned to mac last year after being lured away to PC for some 5 years, so..
cheers

If you can, hold off until June 8th for possible updates to be announced at the annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). When you're spending that much you'll want maximum bang for your iBuck!

Er right, well I did it. Online, they didn't have what I wanted @ the store. Maybe should have waited, but didn't check back here till after making purchase, well I did once...Thanks for the replies.
The laptop I'm using now has worked ok for small projects, but adding just one instance of say Analog Factory and it would glitch and make noise, even with Operator. I got to the point where I don't want to write music.
Then last week, a mysterious pixel line developed on my screen,ad nauseum, which it already had a crack in the top part of the case. And the firewire wouldn't stay in the port making for a really unreliable live gig.

Check Apple's return policy: you can return it for full refund if it is unopened -you have 15 days. You might even be able to cancel the order before it ships.
That said, the next update will most likely be a simple speed bump, & while every increase helps, we're talking about some minor numbers all in all. So it may not be worth the hassle.
Enjoy you new Mac!

Ok, here is what has happened as the day progressed.
1. Somehow my info got screwy when trying to purchase online- didn't go through.
2. Ran to the bank with kid in tow, withdrew 3 grand.
3. Apple store+a very light wallet= A MBP 17"
4. trying to navigate this os... I have Ableton installed, problem with the upgrade path for Reason 4 (rewire issue?) IDK , will try to uninstall and redo.
Have most of my samples installed 23GB! never even knew it was that big...
So I am digging it, need to find a 400 to 800 firewire cable...but other than that I'll be up and running in no time.
I have touch OSC for i pod can't wait to try it out!
These things are built like tanks.
WAaaaaay faster than my other note book.
I probably could have waited for a deal but the way my life runs, something would come up and the money would have been allocated elsewhere.
So... to all you fine people who have given me advice, thank you.
Also I'll probably be asking noob questions for a bit, so bear with me.
I feel the conversion taking place....
