i've just moved over from windows and was using dbpoweramp.

i just downloaded max but is there any more recommended ones out there?

Max is all you need for best quality, and don't forget that you need cdparanoia/libsndfile/lame components. libsndfile library will give you best quality sample rate conversion on OSX, and lame will take care of mp3 encoding (if you intend to rip to mp3s, that is). "Best" is, of course, subjective, but these tools should make you all set for quality ripping and you should look no further.

At higher bitrates, is there really any difference?
And if so, really enough to overcome the fact that mp3 is the universal standard for compressed audio?

the difference is massive, the more people using AAC the more a standard it becomes, i decided to fight for quality. as much AAC as i can.

Really, screw ripping - right click the cd, explore, drag all tracks to your storage, done.

Itunes will do fine for cd to high quality MP3's, and it's free.

EDIT: I looked up a similar thread where someone said that the method mentioned above couldn't be done because the files on a CD aren't wavs, but you can actually add ".wav" to the end of the file name and OSX converts it, no problem.

AAC all the way...I hear a big difference. And, yeah, itunes does a nice job.

A big difference? C'mon, it's either psychological imagination, or improper encoder/codec, or the settings, really!

I compared an mp3 with an AAC file both at 192 recently, through the same system, both encoded with Itunes and the difference was enormous.

This is, of course, a subjective appraisal...but have you tried it?
