Still need slice auditioning/Full Rex implementation

Hello,

How do any of you feel regarding the way Live handles Rex?

I just dont see why they even bothered with recycle import into clips because YOU CANT DO ANYTHING WITH THE FILE.
What is the point of having a transient based manipulation of audio files, when the main file format for this is REX, and yet no markers can be moved or created on a rex file clip!!???
Its basically redundant for anything but playback.

Also now that we do have transients, we need to be able to audition slices to prevent clicks in playback when slicing to midi.No?

I know you all agree with me!!! :o
Now its abletons turn to wake up to serious beatmaking.

I still in theory have to open recycle for pain free accurate slicing with audition functions.

doesnt anybody need to audition their slices? (logic, cubase, any audio editor blah blah...)

rex file import into "Beat" warp mode .wav anyone?

if its a rex file it should already be sliced right assuming the person that rex'd it did it right
i kinda thought slicing to midi with a rex file sliced it up from its rex slice information

yes, and yes.
I used to make my own rexes for exs24, but wanted ableton to be the all in one box. Still find myself going back to Recycle for tight arse beat making (dnb).Btw exs import sucks too.
I just need to "Audition out" the clicks prior to saving/slicing to midi, which i do by setting markers around clicks and pops in the break. Then audition each hit for cleanliness. Not do able in abes.
Once sliced, you delete the pops in midi for a super tight and clean break!(+ recycle compression, yeah!)

I agree you should be able to move / edit slice points before you slice to MIDI. Dont forget you can still put a bit of attack and decay on each slice afterwards (to get rid of clicks). However this wouldn't be as tight as editing the slice points properly.

I wouldn't say its top priority to put in this feature but still would be nice.

oh bloody hell, i feel so stupid trying to chop a beat using the "new" transients system.

Knowing that i will have to analyse and plough through each slice in the simpler/sampler afterwards whilst editing the clip is a REAL vibe killer.
As you know the SCRUB TOOL resolution is set by the current quantise value. This is useless for marking transients within the context of any particular audio file.
It is only useful for very basic monitoring and NOT for the kind of repetitive and accurate auditioning required for slicing beats that resemble anything other than a maximized 4/4 bass drum loop at 126 bpm.

why has ableton not already implemented the scrub tool to optionally play from the nearest (left) transient? (alt key?)

I would be honoured if Dom or any other ableton clever dudes reading this would kindly have a go answering this one, as i love the prog and i just want to see it improve!

Yeah it would be nice to make this process a bit simpler. Allowing quick playback between each warp marker would be shhwweeet!!

For now a rough work around is to:
(warning these instructions probably aren't perfect lol)
  • 1. Change the global quantization to the required timing (i.e. 1/8)

    2. Change the clips grid mode to the required timing (i.e. 1/8)

    3. Lay down your warp markers to the transients (either manually or using quantize)

    4. Turn off loop mode in the clip (but set the loop start and end to the full length of the beat for later)

    5. Make sure that the first marker is set to 1.1.1

    6. Set the start point to the first slice and set the end point to the end of the first slice

    7. Now you can audition a single slice at the required beat, just hover your mouse in to the audio playback area within the slice)

    8. You can do this through all slices by moving the start and end positions to each slice.
A quick way to move the start and end position is to re-enable loop for the clip and then whilst holding down the ALT key move the start point to the next slice (this automatically moves the end point) but you MUST release the ALT key before releasing the mouse button so that the start point snaps to the beat on the grid! Now turn off the loop again and play with the next slice


It may seem like a pain, but it's not too bad if you want to make sure each slice is clean before committing them without having to go back a fourth to a drum rack or sampler.

Once you've gone through this your get the idea.

your right! +1

I think an easy "cut audio file at transient/marker" would be very handy too. I like to work with audio sometimes (even though I love lives slice to simpler feature too!).
I have to cut them manually, almost every other sequencer has a lot of useful functions in this area.
