Why do you call yourself whatever you do?


My forum handles are almost always jcwillia or JRock3x8 - the former was my college userid at U of Illinois, the latter is a bit more complicated. Longwinded explanation forthcoming...


I have picked many "creative" handles for myself over the years. I got serious into poetry in high school and penned under the name "Prisoner of Love", later shortened by friends to "Priz". I also used "Phoenix", "Blade", "null numb nothing" (nin inspired, I confess) just to name a few.

I finally settled on JRock because it was a name that others used for me, not what I called myself. When I started sharing my music with others, they asked "What do you call it?" Being somewhat embarrassed by my earlier attempts to name myself, I declined to answer. So, friends at work started referring to me as "JRock" because my first name is Jason and the "Rock" part, yah I really don't know I guess I wrote one tune that had a mostly guitar feel to it and maybe that started it. Anyways. The "3x8" ending was just a creative tag added to distinguish myself from all the other "JRock"s in the world, not the least of which is one particularly unpleasant looking fella.

You ever had your scrotum bitten by a mountain goat and then have it run off only to find your precious sack for sale on Ebay the following day?

Mine is a character in a book called Florida Roadkill by Tim Dorsey. Always liked the character so I half inched the name.

Mine derives from "El Grapadura", a character from the toon "Beaver Brothers". He´s a wrestler and his name implies a "hard grip". Written with 2 ps its also "hard grappa", the italian liquor.
