Live 8 slow on Macbook Pro

Hello all.
When I run audio or midi clips the screen/playback view has a noticeable delay that varies depending on the tempo. Gets worse at faster tempo.
No problems at all on my son's less fancy macbook.
Seems I'm not the only one having this problem, any help would be appreciated.
10.5.3
2.16 Intel Core 2 Duo
4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM

has this been going on for a while? maybe check your activity viewer to see if anything is going on in the background. how about an OS update?

This started after I updated to Live 8 when it was first released. Two beta version were on my system but I dumped those along with their preferences and the instrument demos. Previously 7 ran without any problems.
Nothing weird happening in the activity monitor but I'm no expert, doesn't look like my system is struggling to run Live.
I've not installed the update because many times that introduces a whole new set of issues I'll have to sort but at his point I'm willing to try.
Any other ideas?
Thanks for your help.

Well I updated to 10.5.6 and there's a definite improvement!
With just a couple audio tracks running looks good so far.
I hesitate to say problem solved because I've not yet done a test with multiple tracks and f/x running smoothly but tonight I'll do just that.
Thanks again.

As a possible future L8 owner, what 10.5.6 brings into the game the 10.5.4 does not?
I have 10.5.4 and 10.5.6 gave me problems with Time Machine so I decided not to upgrade..
Is a 10.5.6 a must requirement for L8?
