Help with Midi Control Midi clip envelope

I would really appreciate some help with this Midi based question. I'm quite new to Midi and to Ableton and I don't fully understand how Midi works.
I'm wondering - is it possible to have an envelope in a Midi clip which causes the Midi clip, when played, to send Midi control messages to Ableton (eg telling it to play clips). Does this require that the Midi messages from the clip are first sent out of Ableton into a translator like 'Bomes', translated into something else, and then sent back into Ableton?
The reason I'm asking is I saw a post on the Ableton DJ-ing forum where someone came up with a live beat rearranging set up in Ableton which I'd like to re-create but I don't fully understand how it works. I THINK it works in the way i describe above- he had a midi clip and he made an envelope in it which sent Midi messages out of Ableton to Bomes and back into Ableton. This envelope triggered a series of clips to record short sections of the music that was playing and he then could play these recorded sections with his Korg Padkontrol to give a beat juggling type effect.
