Aside from the Ableton instruments, which other physical modelling synths would you recommend?

depends what you want with it. There are some pretty good pianos out there (pianoteq, truepianos, etc). For all-around physical modeling check out Tassman

Another vote for Tassman! I beta tested it on version 2 and 3 and it's quite capable. You can build your synths and the learning curve is easier than reaktor or synthedit for example.

i say buy a guitar is what i did for the price of 2-3 plug-ins I got myself a 2nd hand axxe, fret noise, string noise, pitchbend, vibrato, character... all the stuff you don't get from pm synths.

Might want to check out NUSofting Modelonia. Also Synful Orchestra, which is great for accurate emulations, but you can also mess with the parameters to screw up the sound pretty good. Zebra 2 can do some pretty amazing PM type sounds as well. Strings, Brass, and drum type sounds.

Also play around with Zebra's comb filters, they are as impressive to me as any PM I have played with.

If you want physical modelling of classic analog synths then ARTURIA's range are awesome.

If you want physical modelling of Piano then PIANOTEQ is the best (Truepianos is very good too, but is a combination of modelling and sampling).

I love PianoTeq and have recently found Modelonia.

I wonder if there are any alternatives to Collision? I've been playing around a fair bit with SteamPipe (Reaktor) which does a bit of the same kind of sound.

To be more specific, I think I'm interested in Strings and percussion, which makes me wonder if I should just find some money and upgrade to Suite!

The AAS ones that come with Live are quite capable. Just rack them up!
