getting a hot level on dig output

hello,
when i stream the output of live to a dat recorder via the the s/pdif output of my soundcard i notice there is quite a lot of headroom [about 10db]. when i tried to ajust the level within live to make it output at just under 0db [read from the meters of the dat recorder] the sound started to distrort slightly, and live seemed to clip internally. what is the best way to get a hot level from live [digitally] without making it clip internally?
thanks.

In my experience, thats the problem with digital output...you cannot overdrive a digital output unlike an analogue desk or output..as a slight ovedrive will result in very nasty clipping and distortion...I always make sure on the master mixer output of my laptop is only hitting 75%...ard -6db...and I raise up the gain on my analogue desk....that way, I never get distortion on my output signal..maybe you'd like ot give that a try....
hope it helps in a little way..

If you upgrade to Live 8 you can use the new Limiter device to prevent digital overs.

just record it with 10dB of headroom!
go into the sound card's settings and look for settings like "-10dB" and "-4dB" to set the headroom. otherwise don't sweat it, the headroom is fine and your noise floor is still well below that matters.
it's not a problem, don't turn it into one, ya dig?
