Assume you have a polyphonic synth with 10 voices.
If you play 10 ten notes at the same time, one note is handled by one voice.

If you additional play another note, you have 11 notes but only 10 voices.
Then, voice stealing take care of which voice and in which way should handle the new (11th) note.

The easiest way of voice stealing is to sop "old" notes and play the new one, for for example when using a monophonic synth.

/Alex

10 fingers = 10 notes. So which part of your body are you using to play the 11th note?

Some notes of a particular instrument can have longer release time or they can be sustained with the sustain pedal so they will sound longer (pads, for example), while you can still play new notes. Playing multiple notes at the same time is called polyphony and the more notes you play using a plug-in instrument (a VSTI or AU etc.), the more processing power it will require from the CPU in order to be in time to fill in data in the audio buffer. Some instruments have limitations on a maximum number of notes playing at the same time (often called "maximum polyphony" or "maximum number of voices"), so the question becomes actual when the maximum polyphony is reached and still you play a new note which simply would not make any sound (skipped note) if there was no algorithm to deal with the above-mentioned limitation. So there are some ways to handle such situations. For example, an old note (played earliest) can be sacrificed to make space for a new note. This is what Alex was probably talking about.

A note is considered "played" until the end of its decay. So if you have a patch with a sufficiently long decay, you can play a scale with one finger and still use more than 10 voices.

hello .. When I select the video window or fullscreen the videoclip, my computer's keyboard doesn't control Live8.. it's same with all versions of Live 8 (even I just test 8.0.3b2)..
I think it's not my computer's problem, because it's still working with Live 7..
thanx

Please investigate the warp default mode when recording straight audio tracks.
Seems disabling warp mode globally doesn't really disable it when recording audio. All audio tracks in the project continue to default to warp.

Also I'm still hitting the memory ceiling on my new quad-core PC on larger projects that are using MINIMAL native plugs (and no 3rd party VST's). Mainly recording audio tracks now - nothing special. Resources show 1.7+gig memory utilized.

Project is almost 200 channels with 16 submix audio tracks and the remainder MIDI and dedicated automation channels for future purposes. We're using scenes as songs rather than per project for each song. Approximately 35 scenes. And again, using mostly native plugs and synths, and one instance of sfz for general MIDI cells.

Thanks!

Greg

The Ableton support helped me to solve this issue. They told me to delete "Preferences.cfg" file and from then on everything is rock solid so far.

And what about the fucking pitch-shifting instead of the Abletonish warping in Looper when tempo change!!
It's a crime for the warp fathers.
