the Dance Music Manual comes up a lot as the end all be all.

if it's not the Bible it's at least the Qur'an.

And yeah, one book might not cover everything needed properly, so... How about amassing a library?

I have both version 1 and version 2 of the Dance Music Manual. It's OK... not much difference between the two apart from their arrangement. They're more on the technical end, talking about how to synthesize individual sounds for the most part. I don't think that there is enough coverage of music theory or full-on arrangement. Overall, buy version 2 and decide what more you'd like to focus on. The book honestly tries to cover too much in too few pages for any of it to be really in depth. I find myself going back and reading parts over again later on because it's really dense and hard to get through. There really is no be-all-end-all and building up a library is really the only way to go.
For music theory I recommend The Complete Idiot's Guide to Music Theory and a copy of The Chord Wheel:
http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Idiots-G ... gy_b_img_b
http://www.amazon.com/Chord-Wheel-Ultim ... 421&sr=8-1
For mixing and mastering this is the best book I have found so far on the subject:
http://www.amazon.com/Mixing-Audio-Conc ... 473&sr=1-1
Arrangement and such is really something that you can only learn by listening and listening and listening some more.
