A few months back or so on the general forum there was a thread where someone had put up a clip of a wav, and that wav as mp3 (but converted back to wav).

The idea was to see if people could correctly identify, without knowing which had been an mp3.

I cant seem to find that thread to learn the results. Anyone remember that and have it bookmarked?

What was the verdict? Did most people correctly identify the "real" wav?

i remember that. I would have cheated and just ran the samples into the spectrum analyser

I think it was a pretty clever idea though. I would bet almost everyone would easily hear a 320k mp3 as a WAV in a blind test. I suspect that it's only when you know something is an mp3 you suddenly listen so closely as to hear any actual difference.

I know a musician who swears to me he can hear the difference between a CD, and a CDr. Sigh. Blind tests should be mandatory for all autophile claims.

Couple of years back I did some blind A/B testing using Foobar2000 between MP3 and FLAC to see which format I wanted to use to archive my music (and whether it was worth going lossless). Anyway, turns out I could tell the difference between 192kbps MP3 and FLAC, but above that I had a hard time telling the difference. I still used lossless though as I know I get the best quality all the time.

its my understanding from what i saw of the inital results that most people couldnt tell the difference. and some even reckoned the mp3 was the wav.

Yeah, I think the question is if there is enough difference between 320k and lossless. 192 I can totally hear too.
