Should I be looking for an interface to run audio in a live setting?

Any tips or suggestions would be great.

PS I am currently looking at an Apple ibook 1Ghz with 768 Meg ram and Im hoping that will be enough to cover my needs..... anybody use the same laptop???

I use a RME Multiface since 2002 and this is the card... pricy but simply the best.

You absolutely can't go wrong with a MOTU 828 mk2.

I gig very regularly with an iBook G4/800.

I take the 1/8" line out straight into the PA.

Never had a problem.

the built in audio out will eventually die on you - hopefuuly not right before
or during a gig
i used a motu 828 for a long time - i liked it and it was totally dependable
onstage
BUT you need to know motu customer service is non-existant
(ask anyone who uses digital performer)
when my 828 died they wouldnt e-mail me back to tell me where to get it
fixed - phone support was no better
so i bought a 410
in all honesty it doesnt work as well on my i-book (i have a 700 mhz-G3)
as the 828 did-i've had a couple of tense onstage moments with it
i think the drivers leave something to be desired

M-AUDIO FIREWIRE 410 here as well. Kick arse no bulshit card. :)

The breakout box could be a little smaller but at the same time its a good place to put the mpd16 to save space :) (or other gear that fits)

if you have a Mac laptop and you only need stereo out you can get by with just the internal soundcard. Macs very decent outs and it would be one less thing to worry about causing a conflict on stage. if you have a PC i would go with a nice PCMCIA card or if you prefer USB i recommend the emagic a 2|6 and 6|2.

Hi,
I am using a Powerbook G4 1,25 GHZ and a M-Audio FW 410, only problem is that it is not working with my external FW800 drive.
i emailed m-audio and that was their reply,

Try connecting the FireWire drive to one of the ports on the back of the FireWire 410. The issue is that you can only have one device as the master device and some hard drives want to try to be the master device on the FireWire bus and all audio devices MUST be the master on the FireWire bus, so the drive and the FireWire 410 are competing to be bus master.

You should plug in the FireWire 410 to your computer while the computer is off, then plug in the drive to the back of the FireWire 410, then boot your computer.

Please let us know if we can be of further assistance.

 hope this helps

Another vote for the Multiface..... its excellent in every way, from the build quality to its drivers.

The M-audio Firewire FW-410 gets my vote as well - it's relatively cheap, and kicks arse.
