gf wants one and her b-day is coming up? she's a singer/songwriter but I don't think she needs the 4 track kind.. main thing is portability, ease of use, and good on board mics..

i was thinking the olympus ls-10 but if any of you have experience with portable recorders and have recommendations, please chime in.. BTW, my budget is $250

thank you..

Zoom H2, good price.

H4 has 4 track capability if you think she might like that. More complex interface.

Tascam has overdub which is nice for on the fly multi tracking without have to deal with...multi tracking! (easier interface)

i'm on the verge of shelling out on an LS-10 myself...

from my research a while back, in that price range the LS-10 and the Edirol R09HR are the two main contenders, in terms of having the best mics and sound quality...

I bought a Zoom H2 which I really like. I have used it to record both acoustic guitar and environmental sounds. It is easy to use, small and light, there are options for the mic patterns, the recordings seem pretty good.

The only thing against it is that the switches on the sides (on/off, volume) look a bit flimsy...

I haved looked into this a far bit because i want to get one as well.

Sony PCM D50 seem very good quality but a little expensive.

value wise Zoom H2 like other people have said, you cant go past, plus it comes with everything needed to record ( even a windscreen)

H2 fits all the points in your brief.
portable
easy to use
good mics (according to a friend who owns one)

I can especially vouch for the ease of use.
Bought one for a non tech-friendly friend of mine and she is delighted with it's ease of use (as compared with MiniDisc!)

I played with the LS10 one day. It felt nice, like a slick gadget or a cell phone. It sounded decent, but it didn't have as pure of a sound as the pro audio manufacturer's models achieve.

The H2 can't be beat on price. But, it's a bit on the flimsy side.

In your budget I would go with a Yamaha POCKETRAK 2G. For $80 out of your budget, the Edirol R01HR all the way.
