Hi,

Im curious about experiences with quadcore laptops for music production and sound design.

Im especially interesed in if they are noisy, and if I should maybe wait more with buying a quadcore laptop, maybe until the Thinkpad gets more affordable. (Or mac laptops get quadcore)

Cheers

Until I read your post, I didn't even realize that they made quad core laptops. Now I want one.

I'll let you know in about a week how it is working out.

I went with a 2Ghz quad core processor and 8GB RAM

Vista 64 until July, then Windows 7 64bit.

I use a quadcore desktop for production, and it's FANTASTIC. I never worry about CPU usage at all. Then when I'm ready to perform, I render and mixdown to my core2 lappie, and everything runs smoothly.

Are you using the Firewire on it? I've only seen those little FW connections on video cameras. The thought of a quad core laptop is exciting.

I don't think I will be using any Firewire. Just an APC40 (if I ever get it, just got my back order notification from MF) and my Rig Kontroler (from NI's Guitar Rig) which are both USB.

I am at work and I just got an email that a package has arrived at home...so tempted to split work early. :D

Thank you for giving feedback !

If you want to tell, how much did you pay for your laptop?

General question : If I have a patch that maxes the cpu on one channel, like AAS collision easily does with max polyphony, quadcore wont make a difference? As it uses one core for each mixer channel in Live. Is this right?

Cheers

I paid $2100 (including $40 for 2 day shipping).
I wanted quad core, but couldn't bring myself to spend $750 for .75 more GHz.

I am not sure, but I believe I heard that Live basically splits tracks amongst the cores, so multi cores are better able to handle lots of tracks, but don't help out so much on heavily fx laden tracks.

i have a dual core laptop and a quad core desktop, i don't notice much difference really, they both seem plenty fast. Actually I have a max and dell dual core laptop and the dell seems faster, but I don't use it with live.
