8.04 Crashes when rendering video

Post by mono mono 32 » Wed Jun 24, 2009 5:06 am

Anyone else having problems? The video I'm making is only about 2 minutes long. It is chopped up like crazy with lots of edits but it shouldn't be that big of an issue. I tried freezing every track and that didn't help. Any thoughts?

Here's the insanely long crash report which I can't even fully paste:

Well i experience crashes even for just audio export...

what I discovered is that if you do not click somewhere else in the rendering window it will crash when you press ok.

I also have a crash when exporting audio from time to time... This is really annoying. Ableton closes up but the process is still alive, I can not even kill the process in the task list, I have to restart the PC!
Is somebody working on a solution for next releases?

been battling with this on v7.0.16

Like you i've got lots of video edits.

I tried exporting a session that had no or little edits and it exported fine.

What I found was getting QT export error -108 after upgrading from 7.0.10
which have found out is QT memory error

I ran the same thing and opened Activity Monitor and slowly watched both ableton memory
use and a kernel task memory use start to sky rocket as it went thru.

Basically I've been able to get around it by export the video in smaller segments.
But I tried joining them in QT player and there was wierdness in the audio.

So what I'm going to attempt next is to re-import the 3 sub clips back into albeton.
Place them and then re output again...with only 3 edits it should handle it ok and keep
the audio nice n' smooth.

Will update

YEs this worked...

Reducing the number of edits helps cut down on the memory.

Trying to "join" them in QT player didn't work.

I exported Bars 1-17 (1 bar out overlap)
then 16-34, 33-42 etc.

I named the export movies as such "movie A01, movie B16, movie C33 etc"

Then just drag them onto a new track in the arrangement window to
the appropriate bar, when you drag the next set in it will cut of the one
extra overlap bar, and keep going.

I now only had 4 edits in my video track now and could now export the
whole song as a complete movie!!!!

It's not too hard of a work around, but better than all the crashing!

@DJ K-Tel Cheers for that info..

Have been fretting over this for a couple of weeks now, too, and also i believe it's some kind of upgrade issue with QTime..
I'm still on Live version 8.02, and am only now downloading the latest update, so i'm hesitant to believe it's due to Live.
Actually ordered a new hard disk, thinking mine's just buggered 8O

Having noticed that i have differently encoded videos combined, and thought, to give it a try to reformat them;
do you guys perhaps have differently encoded movies, too??

...Anyway, will definitely try out your approach!

Would also like to know if there might be more people experiencing this, as this is the only post i can find on this subject, within this forum :?

i think what ever causes Quicktime to "work hard" will make it run out of memory.
SO things like resizing, rescaling, mixed codec etc. may seem to do this.

that's why i suggest "bouncing" in smaller chunks.

check out a few of the final videos here:

yao thanks for the advice k-tel,

what are you doing to piece the video back together once you have all the separately bounced sections?!
are you throwing the final video pieces back into ableton than exporting it again?

in the middle of trying to export chunk by chunk, bah this is pain
