Inconsistent drag and drop for VST plug ins

Hi all,

I've been trying out the demo of Ableton Live (8.0.3) and I'm mightily impressed so far. But I have one problem with it that is a bit worrying:

Dragging VST plugin instruments from the browser to the session view does not always work consistently. Often when I try to drag an instrument to create a new track, I get no 'drag cursor' when moving the instrument, and nothing happens when I release the mouse. And this problem does not always occur for the same VST (it does not appear to be consistent), although I have never got it to work with Native Instruemnts B4 II.

All the VSTs appear to be working correctly, as I can always double click the instruments to allocate them to the currently selected track. This works fine. The VSTs also all work fine in Sonar 5. But dragging them into the session view only seems to work 50% of the time or less. Is this a known problem? I've been running the demo for only a couple of weeks, and I believe this problem may have only started within the last few days...

One more bit of information: sometimes, when I've tried to drag instruments into the session view without success I have closed down Live and restarted it. Then I sometimes receive the message "Sharing of live sets is disabled as there is more than one instance running", or something similar. But when I open task manager I only see one instance of live running.

My machine is: Intel Centrino 1.86GHz, 2G RAM, Windows XP SP2, Echo Indigo IO. I hope I can resolve this, because apart from this problem eveything is working rock solid and I'm really enjoying the Ableton experience :)

Regards,
-Steve

Oh dear. Nearly a week has gone by, and no reply from either the forum or support themselves (I also emailed them).

The demo has now expired, so it looks like my little experiment with Ableton is over. Shame, because I found the way of working very productive, but I can't really buy software that isn't supported (or maybe it's because I'm using the demo that no-one answers, or maybe everyone's really busy?). Oh well - regards to all...

hi,

sorry, no-one answered your post. I also can't help you with experience in Live 8, but I own Live 7 and don't experience the behaviour, you described.
Here you can find information on the plugin status of Live:

http://forum.ableton.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=25171

did you do a forum search? I guess, if that doesn't bring up a couple of posts relating to the behaviour you described, it isn't much of a problem for most Live users out there.

Thanks for your replies, chaps. Still no official reply from support, but I will probably just wait a while and try Ableton Live 8 again later, or maybe try to get a copy of Live 7 from somewhere...

what i realized regarding to dragging vsts: you need to have the mouse over the vst sign or the name, if you just drag the "line" of the browser without touching one of those, it doesn't work.

don't know if this is related, but i thought it's worth mentioning.

some VSTs take in audio, some take in midi. you can only drop midi plug ins into midi tracks and audio plug ins into audio tracks.

as for the Live is already running, check the processes not just the applications and kill it there.
