Films with great electronic soundtracks

Post by PLacidBasilisk » Mon Jun 29, 2009 5:34 am

I recently re-watched Steven Soderbergh's "Solaris", which utilises some electronic elements, and was reminded of how an amazing soundtrack can really add to a movie (which in this case wasn't particularly inspiring). I remember reading a quote by a famous director, I can't remember who right now, who said something along the lines of "music is 51% of a films success, which is a big call considering it is generally considered to be a visual medium, for obvious reasons.

Does anyone else have any instances of great ambient or electronic soundtracks which are particularly memorable?

fight club's score by the dust brothers was always a favorite of mine. donnie darko has a pretty interesting audio element throughout as well. i'll hazard a guess that punch drunk love's soundtrack is electronic based - but really don't know enough about jon brion to know for sure. he's worked with the crystal method in the past though so it's likely. requiem for a dream has quite the electronic soundtrack as well.. these are a few that tend to stand out for me and seem to lend to the greatness of the films they accompany.

edit - also hackers & trainspotting come to mind

Blade Runner - Vangellis

Koyaanisqatsi - Philip Glass (it's not REALLY electronic, but just... very sequenced :) )

the soundtrack of "Pi" (the sign) has many good tracks of Autechre, aphex twin, orbital.. among others.

definitely soderbergh's "traffic" -- pretty sure it was done by the same as Solaris. great textured electronic stuff.
