"The way UKRuss spotted the typo and then made a funny from it, was very trainspottery."

I usually just hope there's someone else around to do the explaining while I try to shuffle away slowly.

What would you say if asked to describe your musical style in a job interview?
How I describe my music depends entirely on who's asking.

If its someone I like (or if it was in a job interview), then I'll say "electronic music - but not dance music"

If its some jumped-up techno tart in tight jeans, I'll usually say something made up like "genre-core" or "sub-minimal progressive micro step" just to see how they react. Its amazing how many nod sagely when I come out with some made up bullshit.

Quite often, people just keep asking "but what GENRE is it?" "It must be a GENRE".... I usually say that genres are for librarians.

People often say "what does it sound like?" which is a tricky one. I usually just give them a URL.

Except in music forums, I rarely, if ever, talk about my music anymore, unless I actually have a specific piece I'd like someone specific to hear. I found when I was younger that I was always attempting to explain myself, but it was an attempt to make what I was doing, or not doing, seem more than what it actually was. Now I couldn't care less what it is or how it might potentially be perceived.

I just say "um well, I started playing guitar as a teenager then I got out of school and got some recording software. now I've got synths and drum machines and stuff like that." they reply "oh, you make techno!! LOL!!"

Yes, even most of my family members don't really consider me a "musician," even though I've spent an awfully large percentage of my spare time doing it over the past 15 years or better. In fact, none of them other than my parents ever heard the album I spent 3 years working on back around 2000, because just being quiet is probably easier than explaining the porn lesbians making out on the cover. :) Same story with my wife's family. It gets to where you feel like you have to be a secret musician.

Or maybe I'm just a big puss. :?

it always goes like this:

me: electronic music
person: you mean like techno?
me: something like that, but not quite.
person: oh..........................

Around here, it would probably work best if I said "it's a lot like Ricky Skaggs, only almost totally different."
