Great 28 inch monitor for $300

Post by nebulae » Thu Jul 23, 2009 4:46 am

Just got this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6824254026

Considering that an Apple Cinema 30 incher is $1800, I'd say this is a nice second place to be :)

Now of course, you don't get as high a resolution as the Apple Cinema, but then you also don't need a crazy video card to get to the lovely 1920x1200 that this monitor sits at.

And in case you're wondering what 1920x1200 gets you, in Arrange, I see 48 tracks, when fully zoomed out. :)

Just ordered from Newegg this a.m. Since it ships from NJ it should arrive tomorrow. My missus gave her blessing to the purchase, saying it's the first step toward getting a dedicated music computer to replace the aged P4 box. I look forward to being able to RUN 48 tracks!

Enjoy it, Andy - I love it!

Read the reviews though - the monitor is VERY bright, so you'll have to adjust the brightness and contrast to taste. Also, I selected the cool bluish tint rather than the natural or warm tints, and it's overall very smooth and nice now. Loving it!

essentially you don't see more on that 28" cause the max resolution will still be 1920x1200..

you just like it big dont you? :P
I like PRECISELY because it's bigger, because my eyesight is failing in my old age. And since I'm basically only using the Live Suite for most of my music, I can barely see the dials and numbers on the unsizable lower panel of Live (without having to zoom in via preferences). So yeah, the 28 inches is a welcome upgrade. And for $309, I see no reason to get a 24incher for a few bucks less.

you guys missed it.. two days ago newegg had an extra $20 off on that monitor.

I have two of those.. different models but same company, same screen. had one for about two years now and still run it all day at work, no problems! the other i've had for a year for my daw. makes large excel spreadsheets and Live's single-window display very easy to see and use.

^ I have had issues with monitors (dead pixels, what not) so I bought mine from Costco. I paid around $350 with shipping and tax, but for me, it was worth the option to be able to return it by driving over 10 minutes.

I have no fear of ordering from NewEgg - it's great. And they're very good about returns and what not. Just so happens that this was my third monitor this in a week, so I decided to pay a little more to have the convenience option of returning directly to Costco if this monitor was a bust. I'm happy to say it's not. At all!!

As of this morning it's out for delivery on the UPS truck!

Next step is to make some real estate available on the desk. Which means moving the ole' Powermac 9500 (modified with a G3 processor and running OS 9.1) to the back room. Eventually, I will be purchasing a rack-mountable box from ADK Pro Audio - i7 processor, 6GB DDR3 1600 and a UAD 2-solo card. Only question is whether to buy now with a Vista Business 64-bit install (with a free upgrade to Win 7 Pro) or wait for Windows 7 Pro. Their tech support would walk me through a clean install of W7 along with the 50 or so OS tweaks to optimize for audio.

The Dell Dimension 8400 will stay alongside as my video rig, running XP SP3 and Avid Liquid. It's a dual-boot configuration with two instances of XP on two different physical drives. The other drive will remain as the "home PC" drive.

One day soon I'm going to post a couple of pics from 1981 so you can get an idea of the type of equipment we used in the post-production film world some 20 years ago. It looks about as modern as the console in the pic below from 1974, which is from my college radio days.

I've got this monitor and it is legit. Really bright! Not the best monitor if you do a a lot of visual work because the blacks aren't a true as their supposed to be, but every other monitor in the size is like $1000+ so wwho gives a shit.

My settings on this monitor:
Brightness: 33
Contrast: 60
Color Setting: Cool

Live Zoom setting: 85%
Skin: Light Blue

Smooth, nice on the eyes, so much real estate!!!!!! Eat me, Apple Cinema Display, with your 16ms of latency!!!!!!!!
