Got the Jaguar OS X 10.2 update and still only get 2 audio outs from the E-magic emi 2/6. What happened to the 6 audio outs ? At least I'm not getting the distortion from filter tweaking in Ableton Live any more.

that is VERY bad news. i was waiting around for Jaguar to get my 6 outs. looks like i'm stuck in OS 9 still. OR buying a new interface. that blows. are you sure? how pathetic is that? the emi 2|6 is now technically an Apple product and it doesn't even work right. how lame.

well, it appears that they must release a new version of the firmware to then be able to have the option to see the 6 outs. I'm sure it is just around the corner. They seem to be advertising their 6 audio outs a lot and they seem to have acquired E-magic so they would have a hardware box to do this. Give it a few days for the official release.

OSX EMI 2|6 weirdness...

Hi
I just got an EMI 2|6 and set it up with my PB G3 500 running 10.2. I swear after running the firmware updater supplied by Emagic to make it work with OSX, that when I went into the audio/MIDI utility panel in the OS, 6 outs showed up, and I could choose between 16 and 24 bit. Then I booted up Live, and when I went to the audio preferences, there was only one choice, ie 'EMI 2 out'. Furthermore, the sample rate was on 96 khz, and I couldn't change it to anything else! Weird, anyway my CPU usage upon playing shot up to 90% (I never really get it to go past %40)...so I quit Live, went back to the audio/MIDI utility, and lo and behold, I could only pick 2 outs for the EMI 2|6, and I could only also choose 16 bit, not 24. I don't understand what is going on. At least when I booted up Live, the sample rate went back down to 44.1, and my CPU usage returned to usable levels (around 40-50%)...I think I am goin to email Emagic about this. It seemes it's more an issue they need to look at than Abelton?

OK, I think I've figured it out. In Audio Midi Setup utility under Selected Audio Device: it likes to revert to Built-in Audio Controller once your Audio Application or Ableton Live is closed. So before you open up Ableton it looks like you have to set that to emi 2/6 again and then your channel output choices change to a complete list. Select what you want. Also, make sure you select emi2/6 as your audio input too. Launch Ableton Live and you actually get 6 audio outs in OS X with the emi2/6.
Keep working at it. I think we'll figure it out one of these days.

For sorting this out. I actually did also tinker around with the audio/MIDI setup utility after my original post and discovered the same thing, that it reverts back the Apple sound manager as the current device. After selecting the EMI 2|6 and getting the firmware updated, sure enough, stereo pairs 3/4 and 5/6 also show up in Live's prefs, so you can now route the pre-listen to a pair of headphones...excellent!
rock on,
Nate
PS now if only I could get my 2 laptops to sync like they do using OS9! It still seems I am limited to using OS9 Live, since the MIDI timing/sync is so lousy in OSX, althought I think it's a MIDIman issue, and not so much an Ableton one...

What about the performance under 10.2 ?

Still testing latency settings. Screen latency appears to be an issue. CPU % seems comparable to OS 9. Not sure I can deal with the screen redraw latency in a live PA setting.

Will it work under X.1.5 too?

In 10.1.5 you only get 2 audio outputs. You also get nasty output distortion sometimes, especially when using the filters in Ableton Live.
