the Wilhelm Scream - a sound editor joke
the Wilhelm Scream - a sound editor joke
in 1951 a scream was recorded for a western movie. sound editors have been sneaking it into films ever since a long standing joke.

Re: the Wilhelm Scream - a sound editor joke
I remember picking this out as a kid before I knew what it was and wondering why they kept using the same silly sounding scream. I believe it is used in all of the Star Wars and Indiana Jones movies, which is where I first remember hearing it.

HA! Yeah for years I've been saying "WTF is up with people using that stupid scream in all their movies?"
EDIT:
Actually, after checking out the video, I realized this is not the scream I thought. There's another scream that is used a lot in movies... or WAS used a lot. I thought that one was the wilhelm. I always found it very annoying.
"yyyyiiiiiiaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrghhhhh!"
There's another sound that is widely over-used. Let's see if someone can pick it up. The best I can describe it: it's a high pitched "whine" or "chirp" at the beginning of an explosion. Almost sounds like a laser zap or something. (forgive my horrible description skills)
Know which one I'm talking about? What the dealio?

lol similar story for Castle Thunder http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castle_thu ... nd_effect)
Re: the Wilhelm Scream - a sound editor joke
weird. i thought the willhelm scream was that one "extreme" scream that sounds kind of pitched down and goes "YYYYEEEUUUUAAAAAAGGGGGHHH".
c'mon, you know what I'm talking about.
Or what about that crazy shrill bird sound? I've heard it used in The Land of the Lost cartoon from the 60's, i countless commercials and a Tricky song from 1995. WTF?

yeah once you know about it, it's quite funny how often it turns up - it's like an industry wide in-joke

Another good one is the knife-on-metal sound you get whenever anyone shows a knife, even if it hasn't touched anythingalex.the.forge wrote:yeah once you know about it, it's quite funny how often it turns up - it's like an industry wide in-joke

Ask people around the world what noise a frog makes, they would usually say: 'ribbit ribbit'
In fact the only frogs that do make that noise are the Pacific tree frog, which can be found up the northwest coast of America, and specifically in the Hollywood hills. Enabling them to be recorded and so to 'star' in countless movies.

their noise has come to symbolise all frogs, despite being quite unlike most other frog calls
