Live crackles and slows down when I activate my audio interf

I am running Live 4 on a mac with 2.4 ghz and 4 of ram. I just got a simple m-audio "fast track Pro" audio interface and as soon as I activate it as either the out or especially the in for the audio, The cpu's use meter immediately jumps to about 50% and the music slows down and crackles. HELP! I basically can't do anything with the program at this point. I don't have any plugins running, and there is plenty of space on my hard drive. There must be something simple I can do so I can use this program.
