EMU SP-1200 effect rack (L8)

Just something I threw together for dirtying up softsynths and clean samples. Thought it might be of use to others. This uses effects exclusive to Live 8.

The key to the 1200's sound aside from the bit rate is the SSM2044 lowpass filter chip that sits at the end of the "low quality" D/A stage. Lots of rolloff from 10k and up with a nice lowend bump with scooped mids. The sp's sample rate gives it that ring mod sound.

I had a big folder of sounds both sampled through the 1200, recorded through the main outs (these have fast release envelopes on the filter) and recorded at 24 bits/ 44.1K and a/b'ed them to create the rack.

The rack has a ring modulator, redux, 2 lowpass filters, a 1 band notch eq and a saturator in that order with the important stuff assigned to macros. Play with the settings depending on what kind of material you're using (melodic, percussive, bassy, trebly, etc.) It's pretty convincing to my ears. Curious what folks to have clocked a lot of time on an sp think...

Enjoy.

EDIT: should go without saying, but just delete the.txt after the.adg.

Sounds interesting, did just dl and will check it out the next days.

Had a look in your space account, you seem to be quite into sound and its design. Though i can not compare to Hardware, this is something i am fiddling on a lot, reproducing old Sounding HArdware and Vimyl/Schellack with Effects.

Really appreciate it..

Cheers

Back again....what can i say, the Effect Rack is absolutly awesome.

I just had a short moment in the evening to check it out, but it instantly convonced me. Within like a minute of twisting the Macros i had the grittyness i like from the sp assigned to my own sampled drums.

works magic . if you are about to emulate some more old machines sound wise, i would be happy to check your effect rack again. Besides, using those AutoFilters in the chain is something i did not do yet, but it totally makes sense. I just cut out the freqs but the slight movement is even more realistic.

Thanks! Glad you're feeling it!

I was doing Live certification and one of the exercises they had us do was backward engineer some flattened wavs with Live effects on them. We had to recreate the wet ones from the dry ones just using our ears. Guess it kinda got my gears turning....

I thought it might be a nice compliment to the new SP-1200 groove pool files too.

Also: try resampling your sounds pitched up by 1-1/4 to 6-1/2 semitones (33.3 rpm +8% to 45 rpm +8% roughly) and then slowing them down for maximum SP-1200 authenticity!

@dcondax: Someone posted all of these cool dark skins on the board a while back. Here's a re-up on some of my favorites in case you can't find em:

ha nice...yeah always sampled vinyl at 45 with pitch at + 8 to get maximum sample time!

Is the OP active on the forum still?
The rack has a ring modulator, redux, 2 lowpass filters, a 1 band notch eq and a saturator
Is the HP Filter an accident or did you mean 1 LP and 1HP... If I just switch the filter will it have the same effect you
originally intended.

Sound great though.

Hey Mauricio, I just downloaded the link I originally posted, and it should definitely be coming up as a lp followed by a hp (just like the pic).

Thanks for sharing, just had a very quick try out. Turned a pleasant microtonic patch into a huge underground vibe in an instant :)

Hey thanks for the clarification. It sounds great on Snares. I had been using D16's Decimort but I like this rack much better. Where did you find the technical specs for the SP1200, like what type of filters it used? I'm interested in reading about it.
