anyone know how to re-create this weird Royksopp sound?

Does anyone know how to make that strange ever-evolving sound in Royksopp - Vision One
It starts at 44 sec
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tnPZmSDPQEo
It sounds like a short percussive sound looped extremely quickly (move the right loop point to the left on any tiny sample and this will happen) so it creates a low noise and then ran through a slowly moving formant filter or something like that.
In fact, at 1:47 it slows down until it's just a little "blip" then it starts up again.

If you search around on kvr, i remember there was a thread about this same sound, with a lot of replies some time ago.

Wow, you're right. there's been lots of talk about it. Someone got close with a saw wave 2 formants and a bit crusher.
I also learned that the Vision One base line is inspired by Stevie Wonder - Too High.

reminds me of like FXpansion Orca with some formant filters
it also sounds like a saw and a square mix with a filter env that opens quickly and then moving formant filters

In the past I’ve created similar-ish sounds by vocoding two Malstrom synths together in Reason using saw wave based patches on both.
Try experimenting with this (obviously doesn’t have to be in Reason), you may not get the exact sound your after but I’ve found this a really good way to get some fat and interesting synths sounds.

Maelstrom can do some weird stuff. It even has a formantsaw built right into it.
Can you explain how you routed the devices in Reason to do this?

Just to continue this further there's a free VST called s3k that makes sounds very similar to this.

Hi
Can anyone answer this question from a sound engineers point of view?
I like building my synths from scratch and really UNDERSTANDING why things happen.
Come on.. theres some intelligent fellows out there.. !!
(not me..)

Exactly. I used nearly the same sound long time ago and created it 100% in Live. Too bad it is on my old PC, but I clearly remember that I was using Redux and automated the amount.... and I used a filter with resonance, also automated.

I was messing with the S3K wooden preset
http://krakli.com/krakli-free-synths/ and found that if you add a vocoder with the Oct-Six Mod, set it to 8 bands and turn the formant knob it starts sounding even more Rosksopp-ish.

You could also look into what sounds and parameters the hardware synths they play offer. I know they use harware Korgs as well as some other stuff. Could give you a decent look on how they could create the sound using their equipment.

They use KORG MS20s allot so there's a good chance the sound originates from there then it's probably enhanced with real bass and maybe even a hardware vocoder.
