I looked at Live a while back and haven't kept up since, so pardon me if this is an obvious or silly question, but...

Can Live be used /instead/ of hardware loopers like Echoplex EDP and Electrix Repeater (now defunct)? IOW, record live samples and control Live via a foot controller?

I can't say i have used one of these hardware loopers but i know the concept, and the answer is

1) YES, mostly

2) YES EASYILY BETTER SOON


Currently a 'one button to record' is a bit difficult.... due to the way recording is setup, you for instance could just pressing a footswitch to keep on piling up recordings.


this is because you still need to 'arm track' then 'trigger', due to the recording studio concepts hanging over.

There are MIDI workarounds for this, and this can be quite simple or complex.

I have a great setup which consists of a numeric keypad on my acoustic guitar and a my own design of a 'data glove' which allows me to control live, almost completely, without taking my hands of my guitar.

You could get similar results using a midi floor keyboard often used by organists - you have notes to play with your feet.


Better solutions are in the works from ableton.

However, with a bit of hardware you can do almost anything.

Certainly the FX (I monitor thru live) i have available to me beats any guitar pedal.

Also LIVE lets you edit the audio, have pre-recorded loops, effects, whole tracks.

And you can change the tempo after recording, but that currently doesn't sound too pretty for anything not rhythmic... next release will fix that i'm told.
