yes.

rtfm on the midi receiver and the guitar. you're looking for what's known as 'the Roland 13 pin standard.' freaking expensive cable too.

nope, with midi guitar it's that 13 pin standard. it's not midi until it goes out of the midi converter, that's why you need an Axon or Roland box, to turn whatever the guitar outputs into midi.

this will probably help

guitar ---Roland 13 pin cable carrying some non-midi signal----> Axon ---midi cable carrying midi---> any midi synth in the world or your computer's midi input.

my Axon doesn't show up as a midi port but it's USB'ed to the computer because there are quite a few editing options. it can be used without a computer. so, you could be on stage with a guitar, an Axon box and a Moog synth and play.

I want to connect to Live, mostly for composing. Would this setup do:

Axon:

Nylon strung Classical Guitar:

Yes that will work, the other viable option is the Roland GI-20 usb converter box... I have the Roland but I hear the Axon tracks a bit better. The nice thing about the roland though is that you can change all sort of settings from the box itself... like change tunings on the fly, string sensitivities, etc... all from the front panel controls. Enjoy midi guitar is hella fun!

you can do all that with the Axon boxes. lots of menus.

I also like it because there's a tuner on the front panel, very handy.

MIDI Guitar is the best, especially if you're a ummmm....guitar player. I have a Brian Moore iGuitar and the Roland GI-20. I use it with Live non-stop. :)

it has midi in and midi out ports, it's just like a synth. in fact it has a built in synth for very very low latency playing. it's a trip doing program and volume controls from the guitar body.
