If it was me I would get the UAD card. Live 8 looks great but Live 7 is certainly good enough if you had to prioritize.

Fact: Live 7 is good to track and work on. But then you'll fall in love with Ableton and will want to feed them for generations.
Opinion: Live 8 is better for me, right now.

Opinion: Uad plugs are the best plugs money can buy apart from maybe a fully loaded PTHD rig.
Fact: uad plugs are highly addictive and you WILL WANT and WILL buy them all as soon as you have the money.

So it's a thougher question than what it seems. The only quick answer that comes is to place yourself in the state of mind of the very hard working man :)

Not to mention you'll want a Uad quad after you struggle with one/two Uad-1s. You'll NEED the Fatso. You'll want a quadcore to host Live on and be ready for Live 9.
Start working now.

UAD

except you like the adventures life of daily crashes

and the grouptracks suck anyway in the live 8 layout... so go for some real benefits for your sound and saf your money for life 9 or 10

What's the best UAD2 deal? There are so many it's confusing.

How many plugs approximately can Duo and Quad each run?

Depends on the plug. I have the UAD2 quad, and I could run as many plugs as I wanted... My tunes usually average around 12-18 tracks, and I have UAD on every track. Usually 2 or 3 plugs of any type.

Until the Fatso plug just came out... That thing is POWERFUL. Sounds sooooooo good, but you can only use a few along with other plugs going at the sametime. It takes a ton of processing, but anything it touches immediately sounds better. I have it in demo mode still and will most likely buy it later when there's a discount (they do discounts a lot)

I own almost all the plugs they have, but my favorite plugs that I use most often are these:

Neve 1073 EQ (bump up a bit on 35 hz and it's BASS HEAVEN)
Neve 33609 Limiter/Compressor
Pultec Pro
Plate 140 verb (LUUUUSHHHH)
Cambridge EQ for subtractive EQ, cutting lowends and such
LA2A
Roland Dimension D chorus
Fairchild Compressor

I bought the Neve bundle right away when I got my cards (UAD-1 a while ago). You could easily be happy with just that, but be warned, you'll want more :)

Get the UAD. You'll be sooo stoked you did.

Have 3 uad cards.
Over the time i compared them with a lot of other plugins.
Uad is expensive, the only reason that i like them is becuase it runs on dsp.
For the sound?... i choose differentent plugs and outboard hardware.
For some reasons i like nebula better then uad. (wich is only 80 dollars)

The fatso is out now, checked it, it's kinda nice, but....it swallows half my uad card2, so i predict the future will be more high dsp swallowing uad plugs, wich means, you have to buy more cards.:-D
Smart

I have both and for me they're both the best at what they do so you'll have to make up your own damn mind! Either way you'll be happy though.

UAD + True Pianos plugins. Best piano emulation i've heard.

I love my UAD-2 Duo! I bought the Flexi package and spent my $500 voucher on the SSL & Pultec plug-ins. Best purchase I've made so far, 2nd to my Virus TI. I use those almost exclusively to mix my songs now, with a native plug-in here and there. I would easily recommend the UAD-2 to anyone.

They just release the EMT-250 a the world's first digital reverb (1976) people like Bruce Swedien who mixed Michael Jackson's thriller say it's the best reverb ever built. UA ported the code to their DSP (so it's the exact algorithm) and modelled the AD and DA converters, that also contribute to the sound. Like their Plate and Space Echo and Cooper Time cube delay, it sound warm and peculiar in isolation and it just perfectly sits in the mix like nothing else. It also has a modulated delay, a phaser and a chorus and they are unlike anything I've ever heard super good for all kinds of subtle ambience and stereo effects, really really slick.

It's also insanely easy to use, the maximum number of adjustable parameters is 4!

The only problem with getting an UAD is you will want to buy their plug-ins all the time.
But you'll really enjoy it, it will improve the sound of your music and it's healthier than drugs.
:D
