thank you both very much for your answers. i followed mojos advice and am having good success now. thanks!
i also found the posts about the looping issue using CCs, i have the pedal pumping out note values instead and it works perfectly.
and though i was frustrated before, i am really starting to have a lot of fun with ableton. its a very impressive program. i am still using the demo version because i want to see if there will be a good price on a ableton/maxmsp bundle. i sure hope so.
