Whats the best way to generate followers and fans online?

Some of you guys may know the internet well enough. What do you guys feel is the best way or ways to promote your music on social media sites (facebook, myspace, twitter, ect)
Im just having a hard time getting more fans to be aware of my stuff.

Get a bot to autospam the hell out of the sites.
Don't get discouraged when you see other artist's bodycount of friends with complete disbelief after listening to their tracks. In almost all cases they spammed the hell out of the site with friend requests.
