How do I create a pitch bend on an audio track using a midi

Hi,
I'm trying to apply a pitch bend to a drum fill in a techno track. You've heard it before
on 808 drum fills where the pitch of the snare drops as the fill plays out.
I can do this easily in Live 8 just by playing with the transpose knob on the audio track
with WARP switched on. Sounds pretty cool but how I do assign the transpose knob on that audio
track to any of the knobs on my midi controller so that I can record this effect?
I've tried the obvious method of hitting the midi button at the top of the screen, i then select
the highlighted transpose knob and tweak away but I must be doing something wrong because it fails
to assign. I know the controller is OK because i can assign controllers to midi tracks with no problems.
So it looks like assigning midi controllers to an audio track works a little different.
Can anybody tell me what I've done wrong?
Cheers
