FireFace 800 - FireWire 1814 - FA101 - Presonus FirePod

help!
is it really worth it to spend double amount of money on a RME FireFace? I would like to do some classical recordings with strings and Schloeps mics.
But are the converters really double as good in the RME cards?

hello
i just picked up the edirol fa 101
and i am 100% satisfied with my purchase
up to 192k bitrate...capable of surround....ideal for mac core audio.
decent pres, excellent converters, premium analog components...
firewire powered....well built...fantastic unit!
and 1/2 rack space. the motu has been sold and the digi002rack is permanently in the studio now.
there's my .02$ on those units
no matter what you purchase as an interface
if you are looking for !extreme! quality i would consider a high-quality pre-amp...these might run more $ than your digital interface but there really is no comparison between most proprietary pres and, say, a neve or api pre-amp.

can you specificate which system you're using (os, ram, processor) and which version of driver, please? I have with 1814 some probs.. thank you.

How many inputs and which quality (kHz/bit) can you records simultaneously with the 1814?

my pc system is:
windows xp (audio tweaked)
3.2 p4
intel mobo
1.2 gig ram (corsair)
wd raptor drives
nvidia geforce 5700
i use the latest asio 1814 drivers from m-audio, i believe its the v..1028.. one
i also have a sony vaio, centrino 1.6, 512 ram, windows xp.
whats problems are you having? the only problems i run into is recording something when i also have many tracks running as well and my buffer size is set below 256. but this is kind of expected, considering its pushing the limit.

with a comfortable buffer size of 256 and sample rate of 48000 (lets me do everything i need with no problems, and i do a lot...) i get a latency of 6 input, 8 output (14 total). the impotant one is always the input, and 6ms is very good.
if i drop the buffer size to 128 or 64 (or increase the sample rate), the latency drops much lower, and i can get a latency of 1ms at 64 buffer, 96000 sample rate. i use this sometimes to record when im only recording that one instrument, and get no cracks/pops. but this is overkill, and i have come to accept the 256 buffer with 6/8 latency. its very low and never fails me no matter what.

i, for one, typically use one mic input, one guitar input, and two aux inputs at 48000 (all 24 bit). but i dont use them all at the same time. some times i will want a very 'deep' sample recording so i can play with it and/or stretch it, and record at 24/192kHz, but that is overkill, not to mention waste of hd space.....but its there if you want it.
