Digi 001 stuttering with ASIO

set-up:
G3 450 with ultra scsi2 lvd drives.
640 ram, os 9.2.2

DigiDesign Direct I/O ASIO driver v.5.0
Live w/24 update
I'm having a problem when I enable the ASIO driver so I can use my Digi001 with Live. It instantly pushes my processor load up to 60+ percent, before I even load a sample or hit play. I am able to record and play back and resample but... When I record or resample, it stutters the audio along with the interface. If I use Sound manager it is rock solid.
