I was wondering if any tech abletrons could help me out here..
i bought a white macbook after the latest little spec bump a few months ago. I noticed a funny little sound coming from it like a 'pop' at seemingly random intervals. A bit of googling about led me to believe it was the hard drive head 'parking'.
I thought not much of it as i intended to replace the hard drive anyhow. I replaced the hard drive with a 500 gig seagate momentus 7200.4 and the sound has changed to a kind of squelch sound and when it occurs it can cause a freeze in what is happening, such as recording audio which obviously is not good.
any ideas chaps?

did you get the Momentus with or without the G-shock bizo?

i thought i had bought one without the g shock thing but it turns out it has a g at the end of the model number

it wouldn't hurt to run the Apple Hardware Test on it too (it's on your install DVD)...

Here is an article about how to check the status of your sudden motion sensor (whether it is on or off) and how to disable it. it is recommended to disable this when you have a drive with g-force. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1934

Apple released a fix recently for the same problem, it's happening on a lot of recent macbooks and mavbook pros: http://theappleblog.com/2009/10/15/appl ... ve-stalls/

My MBP is older than the supported models in that fix, and so as an alternative I installed the HDAPM application and set it to run at startup using Lingon. The following article has simple instructions on how to set this up without needing to mess around with hidden directories and system files...

This is on 10.6.2 of course, though it should work with Leopard too. And moving from power supply to battery and back to power supply sets the hdapm parameter back to default, so the clicking will start up again until the next restart (unless one runs the 'hdapm disk0 max' command in Terminal manually).
