Kontakt 4 has made an awesome comeback, makeing EASTWEST Orchestra only necessary for you 192KHz freaks. Kontakt is a great and affordable alternative if you're not doing hardcore notation.

EWQL recently offered a free version of SO. It was essentially a reduced version of their silver package. If you can still get it, it will give you a good sample of the EWQL flavor of doing things. It also doesn't require iLok, which is nice.

I guess I'm sort of bringing back a dead thread, but how does Orchestral Ensemble Essentials by ProjectSAM compare to OIC and EastWest? I'm looking into creating some orchestral soundtracks, and being a musician myself, I'm very picky with how something sounds. Currently I'm using EIC for some experimenting, and it does suck.

I prefer EastWest, but if you're not going to buy Vienna Ensemble Pro (a plugin host for $380), you're better off tweaking the OIC. Project Sam has some nice libraries for Kontakt too, but they don't cover full ground. I only use them when I want a specific layered patch. For browsing through sections, EastWest is King. Vienna makes great orchestral instruments too, but their bundles are as high as $12,000.

I'm not sure about orchestral soundtracks, but I guess OEE by ProjectSAM is good enough for some electronic tracks, at least for me and for $100 ) Check it out (from 2nd minute)
