Apart from being good looking, it strikes me as odd that this is the winning 'talent' for an entire nations creative effort. Don't get me wrong, clearly some skill which needed discovery, development and practice on her behalf. Kind of reminds me of this effort by a New Zealand artist who won $15k and first prize with a pile of rubbish.... literally.

Yeah, and perhaps how important the message of your art is, regardless of the medium. Its a cool 'performing art' though.
I do though find just a little bit of cynicism in my response to the public opinion, not her skills. I can't help think that part of the criteria for auditioning would be what can be fitted into a certain time frame, which is solely related to time between paying advertising customers, and the attention span of an audience.

I suppose its the same with music. Public opinion and the evaluation of what is 'talent' is always a moving target with Newness (is that a word?) carrying just as much weight as motor skills.

Completely disagree. The only gimmick is the medium, and she managed to tell a whole story with said medium. You sound bitter.

That she is good looking?
That its an odd summation of an entire nations 'talent' for 2009?
The association with the pile of rubbish that won a national contemporary art award?

Just amused at the court of popular public opinion and how yet another television franchise can shape a persons future.

I am actually busy right now thinking about what I can do with 20kgs of peanut butter, a dozen golf balls and a nanokey. I might as well be prepared for when the franchise hits this town!

I really admire people /craftsmen / artists who're able to create things by -literally- using their own hands.

Apart from the nice drawing itself, what amazed me was how quick and skilful she'd put lines and forms in the sand;
it's like an artist's special brush stroke or how a musician moulds a note and phrases on the instrument (think of a violin or trumpet).

IMO there are a lot(!) of analogies between visual arts and music (structure, material, acoustic colour..)

The string quartet / band sucks, though. Whish they would be as good as she is. And they play Metallica in the end.

I think it takes a Tremendous amount of skill to paint/draw a constantly changing picture within such a small time frame, and to be so concise, with enough detail to draw out such emotions... and to do it with sand of all mediums?.... WOW! Very cool, very cool indeed! I for one, am impressed.
