Favorite Underground Music during 1980-1990

The 80s were great times for underground music. On the one hand bands like Neubauten, Hafler Trio, Coil or TG created milestones in experimental music. Those artists entered new territory. They confronted the listener with extremes, taboos and political messages. They were the pioneers of integrating noise, music, video and performance during live gigs.

On the other hand there were artists that created outstanding deep, melancholic music like Cocteau Twins, And Also The Trees or the Legandary Pink Dots.

As a former collector of Independent and Industrial Music and art I'm wondering if other folks here shared or share the same passion.

So this is a post about Indie/Industrial bands that were different, bands that experimented with electronic gear, noise or melancholy. Bands with relevant impact on the independent music movement during the 80s. If any "Golden Oldies" come to your mind post them here :).

Cheers,
X.

One of my favorite bands back in the days was Pink Industry. It think most of their excelent stuff came up 83 or so. Amazing what a singer, a 808, a bass and a synth with tape delay can do.

Although I was very young during that period (born in '76), the first music I really cared about was early Cure, Joy Division, New Order, and a whole host of other post punk bands in grade school. Unfortunately, I did not really have exposure to the electronic side of things until much later, and of the bands I've mentioned, their use of electronics were not initially the main reasons I loved that sound. However, I think it still subconsciously informs and influences me. Minimal synth lines, starkness, space, tension; it was already there for me hidden behind the emotions.

my all time favourite most mindbogglingly mintest album of all time in my collection is standing up straight by the wolfgang press. released 1986 i think, 4ad records. its one album i come back to time and time again
the cover and artwork are fantastic, 4ad took a lot of care over their presentation i think. my copy is still as new - i dont really let anyone else touch it except for one or two of my mates who know about the wolfgang press.

once my mrs picked it up for a look in a kind of a 'casual' way and i freaked out

hmmm....ive started going off on one a bit...

also....

throwing muses - hunkpapa and their first album
dead can dance - spleen and ideal
(both 4ad bands too  :) )

coil - i was fairly into horse rotorvator for a while

bongwater - were they late 80's? i think doublebummer was. epic album

remain in light - but not really underground though

anyone heard of the utter pop genius of WIN? they had 2 albums out in the late 80's which in my opinion as blueprints for perfect pop albums take some beating. one was called 'uh...tears baby. a trash icon'. the other was called freaky trigger

arkane - 69 and 'i'. both dreampop/noise masterpieces

This album got me into electronic sounds when I was about 10 years old (mid 80's):

Jean Michel Jarre - Zoolookologie

Title track - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6qnY5wyXOoY

There is an amazing array of otherwordly sounds in there, essential listening IMHO.

A lot of great stuff happened in the 80s. How much was 'underground' was debatable.

Heck, I remember when stuff like Detroit Techno and Acid House was underground before S-Express and D-Mob brought it into the charts. When Todd Terry and Kevin Saunderson and Derrick May were hardly known. Stakker Humanoid. 808 State.

Stuff like New Order, The Cure, Yello was all brilliant stuff but it was also major label heavily promoted stuff. Things like Cabaret Voltaire and especially Throbbing Gristle were more indie/underground. Sonic Youth were still indie in the 80s and they shook things up a lot, especially Daydream Nation. My Bloody Valentine's first album and in 1990, the brilliant Loveless on Creation, who were a label which I looked up to until they sold out to Britpop.

4AD too. I used to collect 4AD stuff, The Pixies are still one of my favourite bands of all time, and the fact they shared a label with stuff as diverse as Dead Can Dance, Cocteau Twins, Mazzy Star, Throwing Muses, Lush etc was all very cool.

One of my favorite bands growing up in the 80's were The Lotus Eaters. They're more "pop" than "underground" though. They recently played The Philharmonic Hall live in Liverpool and it's great to hear they haven't lost the touch. Here are clips on YouTube of that concert...
