Assigning MIDI Controller to FM8 in Ableton 8

Hey everyone! Did a brief search for a while through the net and here and havent been able to find anything that addresses this.
Im running FM8 in VST mode within Ableton 8 and I am trying to assign a knob of one of my hardware controllers (APC40 or MPK49) to one of the FM8 controllers in the MOD page so I can record/automate key features (particularly pitch). (Did find a workaround by automating the transpose function, but its kind of clunky and I think its more limiting and i would rather do this through modulation). The midi learn within FM8 doesnt seem to do the trick, nor does the configure mode in Ableton allow me to select the mod wheel or any of the other "controllers". Also, i can not change the MIDI controller number on the MASTER page of FM8 to anything other than what is automatically assigned while in VST mode. If i change it in stand alone mode, it sticks, but will no longer act as the controller as it did in stand alone mode.
Does this make any sense to anyone? haha!
Is this a known problem? I would really like to see if there is a workaround.
Running windows Vista, Ableton 8.0.4.
Thanks in advance to anyone who responds.
