edit: THERE IS NO adware embedded in Live!

I just ran a ClamXav virus scan on my Mac (10.4.11) and it uncovered this:
ableton live young and cute.zip--Adware.Dropper-28
ableton live.zip--Adware.Downloader-82
I've only ever used official Ableton links, and I'm a fully paid-up license holder of Live 7.0.16. Can anyone explain this, or does anyone want to comment?

Virus scanners for Macs install their own viruses. Otherwise they would never find anything.

What is that "Ableton Live young and cute zip"? That doesn't exactly sound like something they would post for download...maybe a live pack you got from a porn site? Also, googling for live packs is probably a bad idea - anyone who cares about making those usually posts them here in the forum.
As for the other, email customer service - asking here is pretty much only going to get you speculation, and their customer service is well reputed for a good reason, ie. they answer promptly and correctly.

That's what I thought, but I've never downloaded any third party Live packs at all, other than a couple provided in links from the Ableton newsletter.

Yup. I'm an admirer of the whole Ableton model, I just thought it might be a topic others had seen too, and could clear up quickly.
Thanks for your help.

Folklore! Explain why one of the "features" in 10.6 is various forms of malware/virus protection??

I think it was a joke.
If not - explain why ClamXAV - which is open source (i.e. NO PROFIT) would install viruses...

Can you post the complete message?
Or a screenshot?
Are those 2 entries actual files on your harddrives?
Our downloads are never only named "ableton live.zip" without version number etc., not to speak about young and cute...
Cheers,
Dom

Hi Dom, thanks for your help. The scan is still on-going, so I don't have the resolution proposal yet, but the screen looks like this so far:
I'll give you a full report when all is clear.
Thanks again

Never used ClamXav, but to me it just looks like it found two files on your harddrive that contain malware:
ableton live young and cute.zip
and
ableton live.zip
The Adware Dropper-28 looks like be referring to an adware called fotomoto
http://www.scanforfree.com/19/adware-fo ... mover.html
fotomoto is windows only.
Are you scanning several harddrives? External ones? Did you just switch to the Mac?
Do a search for those two files using the finder, looks like you have some windows cracks on your harddrive(s)...
Cheers,
Dom

Aye. It looks that way to me too. The only reason I associated the file directly with you is that I've only ever downloaded Live stuff
from you (or links provided by you). This has obviously crept in disguised as something else. Sorry to cause alarm--feel free to delete this thread if you think it creates confusion and casts false aspersions on your company. As I said earlier: I am a great admirer of the Ableton product line. Thanks for all you do for the music community.

Adware usually names itself after stuff on your hard drive so it's not obvious to spot as far as I was aware.

It was something added to make the PC turn Mac users feel comfortable.
Like the new Mac users who ask "How do I optimize/defrag my drive?" You don't on a Mac. This causes trust issues. If it's too good to be true...
